Special Effort !

As most of you know the Sean McKenna Cup is an event that means a lot to our club and members alike, each year on the build up to the event there is always that extra little push to get work done to try and make a special effort to ensure the event will run as smooth as possible and the last few weeks were no different with the lads pitting in a lot of hours. This year's plan was 120 targets over 15 stands running along the "River" side of the ground which not only offers potential for level and high targets but also opportunity for shooting down on targets which can add an extra challenge for some. This year we had a € 1000 on offer for the prize fund.

On Sunday morning we seen the first of the days competitors arrive in the car park at 7.55, these were obviously hoping to get the around the 15 stands before the weather was to change as had been forecast.
By 10.20am we had 100 guns registered and this was a good indication that it was to be a busy day. As the morning went on it turned out to be a near perfect day for shooting as it was slightly overcast and not a breeze to affect the targets. Over the course of the day there were some very impressive scores being returned to the office, the first triple figure to be taken was Derek McCloskey with a nice even 100, soon after this Liam McDonnell's came in with a 108 which held top spot until Martin Gavigan returned a 109 and this held top spot for a large part of the day. As the last 3 squads finished up the list of names for the super final was starting to take shape, Mark Doyle added another 109 to the mix but Andrew McKeown was to pip them all to the top of the shoot off list with a outstanding 111 x 120. The top scores going forward to the super final were. Further down the classes there seemed to be as good mix if targets as each class were very close to what is expected within their averages

The shooters who made the final were Declan Scullion 106, Niall Keogh 106, Michael McPhillips 106, Kenny Thomas 107, Liam McDonnell 108, Mark Doyle 109, Martin Gavigan 109 and Andrew McKeown 111. Unfortunately just as the final was about to start so did the rain that did arrived but thankfully later than foretasted, but the on set of the rain didn't put off the crowd of about 40 hold back to watch the fine display of shooting that was to take place. The final was to be A 30 bird over 5 stands and their total was to be their original score plus the final. As the finalists moved through the 5 stands there was some changes to the positions and held the scores close. When the final score was totaled it was Mark Doyle who emerged In top spot with a 1 bird lead over Andrew McKeown who was a further 1 ahead of Niall Keogh in 3rd ((Niall had the highest total for the final with a 23x30)).
This win for Mark was to be his third time to win the Mill Hill Open and receive the well-known Sean McKenna Cup, a cup which has the names many of Irelands top English Sporting Shooters on it from over the years. The presentation of prizes was again to be done by Sean himself as he takes great pride in this event and is always very appetitive of the number of people who turn out each year to shoot it.

Mill Hill Cpsc would like to thank Members and visitors alike who travelled to this event, and we are very grateful for your support ,this year we had 176 guns in total and to see this number makes all the hard work very worthwhile. On this note we need to thank Get Stuffed Food To Go with a Mark & Alfie for keeping everyone well fed all day, in the office was Mark and Shane and their relief crew Derek and Martin. Special thanks to Philipstown Engineering for the use of "Peggy" The mobile crane which you all seen on stand 3 & 4. On the ground helping with the set up and maintaining it we had Larry, Terry, Bernard,Tony, David, Derek, Maurice & Nigel thanks folks super job.

And finally huge thanks to Sean, John and the McKenna Family for the continued support and use of their lands.

Next on our list will be the 100 Bird Winter Series, Stay tuned for the upcoming dates in October and November ..
